SKU 5110011 Categories ,

15″ American Urn-form Coin Silver Pitcher Ewer circa 1853 This American, 19th century urn-form ewer or pitcher stands approximately 15″ tall to the top of the handle and has floral scroll and acanthus decoration: acanthus and scroll handle, and spout with grape and vine decorations. There is no makers mark, nor a silver stamp, but it is handmade and tests positive for silver. It is the standard .900 coin grade silver made most likely by a New York or Philadelphia silversmith, but cannot be attributed positively to a specific silversmith. It is hand-chased and hand-tooled. This rare piece is steeped in Asheville, NC history, the hand-engraved inscription reads:

“Presented to Mr. & Mrs. John H. Murphy by the Bridal Party – B.S. Guion, Jas. A. Patton, W.M. Hardy, John D. Hyman, W. Augustus Patton, R.L. Lewis, Jos. R. Osborn, Rhos. McEntire, MaryAnn Williams, Clara Erwin, Mag. McDowell, Mary Joe Tate, Harriette E. Osborn, Sue Johnston, Sallie Grier, J.G.S. McDowell, Miss Rose Patton

In rememberance of the 14th of September 1853”

(John H. Murphy married Clara Patton on September 14th, 1853 in Buncombe County, NC)
